Wednesday, April 15, 2026-Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has sharply criticized Hungary’s new political leader Péter Magyar after Magyar suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin acts as a “godfather” figure influencing a regional bloc of leaders, including Serbia.
The comments quickly triggered a diplomatic and political exchange between Belgrade and Budapest.
Vučić dismissed the accusation in unusually blunt terms, calling the remarks “foolish” and “stupid,” and rejecting the idea that Serbia is being “pulled strings” by Moscow.
The clash came shortly after Hungary’s political shift following its recent election, which brought Magyar’s party to prominence and reshaped the country’s leadership dynamics.
The dispute highlights growing friction in the region over foreign influence narratives, especially regarding Russia’s role in Southeast Europe. While Vučić has long maintained close ties with Moscow, he insists Serbia’s foreign policy is independent.
Analysts say the exchange signals a more confrontational tone in Balkan politics as new leaders challenge established alliances and rhetoric intensifies across the region.
