Thursday, April 23, 2026-U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired Navy Secretary John Phelan, ordering his immediate removal in a sudden shake-up of Pentagon leadership.
The Defense Department confirmed that Phelan is “departing the administration, effective immediately,” though officials did not provide a detailed reason for the decision.
The dismissal comes during a period of heightened military pressure linked to the ongoing Iran conflict, where the U.S. Navy is playing a central operational role.
Reports indicate that internal tensions over shipbuilding strategy, leadership direction, and management of major naval programs contributed to the decision. Phelan had reportedly clashed with senior defense officials, including Hegseth, over the Navy’s modernization priorities and long-term fleet strategy.
Following his removal, Navy Undersecretary Hung Cao has been appointed as acting Navy Secretary, continuing a pattern of rapid leadership changes within the Pentagon.
The move adds to a broader series of high-level dismissals under Hegseth’s tenure, raising questions about stability and continuity in U.S. defense leadership at a time of active global military engagement.
