New indirect negotiations with Iran underway via Pakistan mediation.

Friday, April 17, 2026-Fresh indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran are now underway, with Pakistan playing a central mediating role as diplomatic efforts intensify to prevent further escalation.

The talks are being conducted through backchannel communication rather than direct engagement, reflecting continued distrust between both sides even as pressure builds for a political breakthrough. Mediators say the goal is to stabilize the fragile ceasefire framework and reopen pathways toward a broader settlement.

According to diplomatic sources, Pakistan’s mediation structure is facilitating the exchange of proposals on key sticking points, including security guarantees, sanctions relief, and regional de-escalation measures.

Recent rounds of communication have focused on extending temporary ceasefire arrangements while laying groundwork for more formal negotiations. While no final agreement has been reached, officials involved describe the process as active and ongoing, with multiple regional stakeholders supporting the effort behind the scenes.

However, significant obstacles remain. Deep disagreements over core security issues continue to slow progress, and both sides are still wary of committing to direct talks. Mediators caution that the current phase is highly fragile, with the risk of breakdown if military or political pressure escalates.

Despite this, the renewed indirect channel is being viewed as one of the most structured diplomatic efforts so far, keeping alive hopes that dialogue can prevent further deterioration in the conflict.
