Eastern Utah measles infections double within a week, health officials say

Friday, April 3, 2026-A fast-moving measles outbreak in eastern Utah is raising urgent public health concerns after infections more than doubled within just one week.

Health officials confirmed that cases in the Uinta Basin—covering Uintah, Duchesne, and Daggett counties—jumped from 23 to 56, signaling a sharp acceleration of the highly contagious disease.

Authorities say the surge is being driven largely by low vaccination rates, with most infections occurring among unvaccinated individuals, particularly children. The outbreak is part of a wider statewide crisis, where hundreds of cases have already been recorded in recent months.

Experts warn that measles spreads extremely easily through the air and can linger in a space for hours, meaning many more people may have been exposed without realizing it.

Health officials are now urging immediate action, emphasizing that vaccination remains the most effective protection against the virus. Communities are being asked to stay alert, monitor symptoms, and make informed decisions as the situation continues to evolve rapidly.

With cases rising week by week, officials warn that without stronger containment efforts, the outbreak could intensify further and spread beyond the region.
