DONALD TRUMP claims victory as Iran retains leverage over Strait of Hormuz

Friday, April 10, 2026-As the United States frames the outcome of the latest conflict as a strategic victory, analysts say the reality on the ground is more complex, with Iran emerging weakened but still holding significant leverage over one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, the Strait of Hormuz.

While Washington highlights military gains and a ceasefire agreement, the geopolitical balance appears far from settled, especially in the Gulf region.

Despite suffering heavy economic and military pressure during weeks of confrontation, Iran is reported to have maintained its influence over shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.

This narrow waterway, through which a large portion of global oil flows, has become a central bargaining tool, with Tehran increasingly positioned as a gatekeeper capable of influencing global energy prices and maritime movement. Analysts note that even under strain, Iran’s ability to disrupt or regulate traffic gives it continued strategic weight.

At the same time, the fragile ceasefire has not fully resolved underlying tensions, as both sides continue to assert competing narratives of success. While the U.S. emphasizes deterrence and battlefield achievements, Iran’s retained control over key regional pressure points suggests a more divided outcome.

For global markets and Gulf states, the concern now is not just who “won,” but how long this uneasy balance can hold before tensions shift again.
