Tuesday, April 21, 2026-Former Bulgarian President Rumen Radev and his party have taken a commanding lead in the country’s latest parliamentary elections, according to early results and exit polls, signaling a major political shift after years of instability.
Initial projections showed Radev’s center-left coalition, Progressive Bulgaria, ahead with roughly 38% to over 43% of the vote, far outpacing rival parties as ballots began to be counted. These early figures confirmed pre-election expectations that his bloc would dominate the vote in what was Bulgaria’s eighth election in five years.
Radev, who resigned earlier this year to enter the race, campaigned heavily on anti-corruption reforms and political stability, themes that resonated with voters frustrated by repeated elections and weak coalition governments. He declared the result a “victory of hope,” emphasizing a mandate for change and governance reform.
As counting progressed, his lead widened significantly, with later tallies and projections suggesting his coalition could secure around 44% or more, potentially even achieving a parliamentary majority. Such an outcome would mark one of the strongest performances by a single party in decades and could finally end Bulgaria’s prolonged political deadlock.
The result also carries broader geopolitical implications. Radev has previously expressed skepticism toward some European Union policies and openness to improving relations with Russia, positions that may influence Bulgaria’s direction within the EU and NATO if his victory is confirmed.
