Airstrikes in Somalia kill 54 al-Shabaab terrorists

Thursday, April 16, 2026-Airstrikes targeting the al-Qaeda-linked group al-Shabaab have killed 54 militants in Somalia, according to the country’s Defense Ministry, in one of the latest major offensives against the insurgent group.

The ministry said the operations took place across multiple regions, including Hiran, Lower Shabelle, Bay, and Lower Jubba, where aircraft struck militant positions and destroyed key supply stockpiles.

Officials said the strikes significantly weakened the group’s logistical capacity, mobility, and ability to organize attacks against civilians and security forces.

The attacks are part of an ongoing military campaign by Somali forces and international partners aimed at reducing al-Shabaab’s presence in rural strongholds.

The group continues to carry out attacks across the country despite repeated air and ground operations, making Somalia’s security situation highly volatile as the government intensifies its counterinsurgency efforts.
