Monday, April 27, 2026-A deadly roadside explosion has killed at least 20 people and injured 36 others in Colombia’s violence-hit Cauca region, after an explosive device was detonated along the Pan-American Highway in Cajibío.
Authorities say the attack targeted a civilian bus as it passed through the area, turning a routine journey into a mass-casualty event.
Officials report that most of the victims were civilians, including women and minors, with several of the injured in critical condition.
Emergency crews rushed survivors to nearby hospitals as the blast left a large crater and destroyed multiple vehicles on the busy highway. Regional authorities have declared mourning and called the incident one of the most severe attacks on civilians in recent years.
Security forces have blamed armed dissident groups operating in the region for the attack, as Colombia’s southwest continues to face escalating violence linked to territorial control and illegal armed activity.
Investigations are ongoing as the government deploys additional troops and intelligence units to prevent further strikes in the area.
