Sunday, March 15, 2026- The Old Dominion University community is mourning the loss of Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, a decorated Army combat pilot and ROTC instructor who was fatally shot during a classroom attack on March 12, 2026. Shah, 42, was a veteran of multiple combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and had returned to his alma mater to teach military science and mentor future officers when the shooting occurred. The FBI is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism.
The gunman, identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, opened fire inside a business school classroom before members of the university’s ROTC program confronted and subdued him, preventing further casualties. Two other individuals were wounded in the attack and hospitalized; one was later reported in critical condition. Shah’s students and colleagues praised his leadership and bravery, noting that his presence on campus was a source of inspiration for many.
Friends, family, and state officials expressed profound grief at Shah’s death, highlighting his dedication to service and his impact on those he taught. Virginia’s governor ordered flags flown at half‑staff in his honor, and tributes have poured in from across the military and academic communities. Shah is remembered as a committed soldier, educator, and family man who had planned to retire and continue serving his community.
