TRUMP administration orders restart of oil drilling along California coast amid Iran war

Monday, March 16, 2026- The administration of Donald Trump has ordered the restart of offshore oil drilling along the California coast, citing national security concerns tied to the ongoing conflict with Iran.

The move invokes emergency powers under the Defense Production Act to boost domestic oil production as global energy markets face pressure from the war. Officials say the decision is aimed at stabilizing fuel supplies and ensuring reliable energy for military operations on the U.S. West Coast.

The order directs Sable Offshore Corp. to resume operations at offshore platforms and pipeline systems near Santa Barbara that had been inactive for years. The facilities are capable of producing tens of thousands of barrels of oil per day once fully operational.

Administration officials argue that restarting the infrastructure will strengthen domestic supply at a time when rising tensions in the Middle East are threatening global oil routes and pushing fuel prices higher.

The decision has triggered an immediate political clash with Gavin Newsom and other California leaders who oppose expanded offshore drilling. State officials and environmental groups warn that the order could increase the risk of coastal oil spills and damage the state’s ocean economy.

The dispute is expected to move quickly into the courts, setting up a major legal battle between federal authority and California’s environmental protections as the energy crisis linked to the Iran war continues to unfold.
