Sen. HAWLEY to oppose Iran war powers resolution amid heightened conflict

Wednesday, March 4, 2026-Senator Josh Hawley announced that he will vote against a Senate war powers resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s authority to conduct military operations related to the conflict with Iran.

The resolution — backed primarily by Senate Democrats — seeks to compel Congressional approval for continued or expanded U.S. military involvement after recent strikes and escalating hostilities in the Middle East. Hawley made his position clear following classified briefings on the Iran campaign, saying the administration’s actions so far appear to comply with the 1973 War Powers Act and therefore do not yet require additional approval.

Hawley’s stance marks a notable shift from his earlier support for a similar war powers resolution concerning military involvement in Venezuela earlier this year, where he initially joined bipartisan efforts before ultimately withdrawing support.

In the current situation, he argues that as long as no U.S. ground troops are being deployed, the statutory conditions do not yet trigger a requirement for explicit Congressional authorization. His position aligns with most Senate Republicans, who are expected to oppose the measure, making passage unlikely without significant bipartisan backing.

The vote comes at a tense moment in Washington, with lawmakers debating how to balance executive war authority with constitutional oversight as the conflict unfolds. Critics of the administration’s approach argue that unchecked military action risks drawing the U.S. into a prolonged confrontation, while supporters like Hawley and other Republicans emphasize the need to maintain flexibility in national defense.

With deep divisions in both chambers of Congress and a likely presidential veto if the resolution were passed, the issue highlights a broader struggle over war powers and congressional influence during one of the most consequential foreign policy crises in recent years.
