Russia expels British diplomat over alleged economic espionage

Monday, March 30, 2026-Russia has announced the expulsion of a senior British diplomat, accusing them of engaging in economic espionage that allegedly targeted Russian industries and strategic sectors.

Moscow’s foreign ministry characterized the actions as a “serious breach of diplomatic protocols,” claiming the diplomat was involved in gathering sensitive economic information that could undermine Russia’s economic security.

The move marks a sharp deterioration in relations between Moscow and London, coming amid broader tensions over geopolitical disputes and mutual accusations of interference.

British officials have condemned the expulsion as unjustified and politically motivated, asserting that the diplomat was conducting routine diplomatic duties and rejecting the espionage allegations outright.

The incident is expected to further strain diplomatic ties, with London signaling it may respond in kind. Analysts say the expulsion underscores the ongoing distrust between Russia and Western governments, and could lead to additional reciprocal measures in the coming weeks.

Observers warn that such tit‑for‑tat actions risk deepening diplomatic rifts at a time when cooperation on global economic and security issues is already limited.
