Wednesday, March 4, 2026-Qatar’s Ministry of Defence has announced that the Qatar Emiri Air Force shot down two Iranian Sukhoi Su-24 bombers after they entered Qatari airspace during ongoing hostilities linked to the broader Middle East conflict.
The ministry said the aircraft were detected approaching Doha and were engaged in accordance with Qatar’s rules of engagement after warnings were issued. At the same time, Qatar’s military reported successfully intercepting multiple ballistic missiles and drones targeting the country’s territory.
Officials described the downing of the two Iranian warplanes as a major escalation, marking the first confirmed destruction of Iranian combat aircraft by a Gulf state since regional tensions intensified earlier this week.
The defence ministry emphasized that Qatar’s armed forces acted to safeguard civilian areas and critical infrastructure, including energy facilities that have been under heightened alert amid missile and drone activity. Search operations for the crews of the downed aircraft were reported to be underway, though their fate remains unclear.
The incident underscores how the conflict has expanded from a U.S.–Iran confrontation into a wider Gulf crisis involving multiple nations’ air defenses. Qatar, a key regional partner of the United States, has condemned the action as a violation of its sovereignty and joined other Gulf states in calling for coordinated defence measures.
As tensions remain high across the region, the engagement highlights both the risk of further escalation and the growing complexity of air operations in contested airspace.
