Iran's ARAGHCHI confirms contact with US envoy WITKOFF, denies negotiations

Tuesday, March 31, 2026-Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has confirmed that he has been in direct contact with the United States’ special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, but he firmly rejected that those exchanges amount to formal negotiations.

Araghchi said messages have been exchanged either directly with Witkoff or via regional intermediaries, clarifying that these communications are informational and not part of any peace talks or cease‑fire discussions.

Speaking to international media, Araghchi stressed that despite ongoing contact, no official negotiations with the U.S. are underway. He emphasized Iran’s deep mistrust of U.S. intentions and pointed out that Tehran has not responded to recent U.S. proposals on ending the conflict, nor has it presented its own terms in a way that constitutes structured diplomatic engagement.

The comments come amid continued war and high tensions between Iran and the U.S. and its allies. Tehran’s stance reflects broader skepticism toward Washington, with Iranian leaders insisting that message exchanges should not be viewed as progress toward peace unless underlying trust and substantive diplomatic frameworks are established.
