Iran is shooting at some of the world’s busiest airports

Wednesday, March 4, 2026-Iran has expanded its retaliatory strikes across the Middle East to include some of the region’s busiest civilian airports, hitting major commercial aviation hubs and causing significant disruption to global air travel.

Airports in the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai International Airport — one of the world’s busiest international transit centers — as well as facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain and Iraq’s Kurdistan region have been struck or affected by drone and missile attacks amid the broader conflict triggered by U.S. and Israeli actions. Gulf air defense systems have intercepted many incoming projectiles, but debris and explosions have still caused damage and injuries at multiple locations.

The strikes have created a cascading impact on aviation as airlines cancel flights and several countries close portions of their airspace. Major transit points such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha, which normally connect Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas, have experienced severe operational disruptions. The shutdowns have left hundreds of thousands of travelers stranded, with airlines scrambling to reroute aircraft and adjust schedules due to ongoing safety concerns.

Beyond the immediate travel chaos, the targeting of key civilian infrastructure like airports highlights the escalating regional tensions and raises broader concerns about economic fallout, including disruptions to trade and global supply chains. As airspace restrictions remain in place and military exchanges continue, the aviation and commerce sectors are preparing for the possibility of prolonged instability.
