Heavy rain, floods kill at least 45 people in Afghanistan and Pakistan

Monday, March 30, 2026-Heavy rain over the past several days has triggered severe flooding and landslides in both Afghanistan and Pakistan, killing at least 45 people and injuring dozens more, authorities say.

In Afghanistan, torrential downpours have caused flash floods that swept away homes and collapsed buildings across multiple central and eastern provinces, with the National Disaster Management Authority reporting 28 deaths and dozens injured, while more than 100 homes were destroyed. The extreme weather has destabilised roads and left many families displaced.

Across the border in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, heavy rainfall has also led to flooding and structural collapses, with at least 17 people killed and several others hurt as roofs and walls gave way under the storm’s force.

Local disaster management officials have emphasised that children are among the victims, highlighting the human toll of the flooding and the vulnerability of communities in rain‑prone regions.

Both countries remain at risk as unstable weather conditions are expected to persist, raising fears of additional rain and further flash floods. The disasters underscore the ongoing challenge of extreme weather events in South Asia, where infrastructure weaknesses and climate vulnerability compound the impacts of heavy rain on already strained communities.

Authorities have urged residents in flood‑prone areas to remain vigilant and have activated rescue and relief operations to assist affected families.
