Tuesday, March 31, 2026-Fidel Castro’s grandson, Fidel Ángel Castro Díaz-Balart, has publicly criticized Cuba’s current leader, Miguel Díaz-Canel, arguing that the country’s citizens are increasingly frustrated with the government and desire a shift toward capitalism. Speaking in a rare interview, he highlighted economic stagnation, shortages, and lack of personal freedoms as key reasons many Cubans are pushing for systemic change.
Castro Díaz-Balart emphasized that while the government continues to promote socialist principles, the youth and entrepreneurial class are seeking more opportunities for private enterprise and international investment. He warned that failure to address these pressures could lead to greater social unrest.
The remarks mark a notable challenge coming from within the Castro family, long associated with the country’s revolutionary leadership. Analysts say the criticism reflects growing dissatisfaction among Cubans and increasing calls for reforms to modernize the economy and open markets.
