Wednesday, March 4, 2026-The Democratic National Committee has narrowed its shortlist of potential host cities for the 2028 Democratic National Convention and confirmed that it will not hold a similar event ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Party officials announced that the presidential nominating convention is scheduled for August 7–10, 2028, and have selected Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver and Philadelphia as the frontrunners under consideration for hosting the high-profile event.
The decision to forego a midterm-focused convention reflects a strategic choice by Democratic leaders to conserve resources, focus organizational efforts on key midterm races, and avoid the financial and logistical commitments that come with a standalone party gathering. Internal party officials argue that avoiding a midterm convention could provide Democratic candidates an edge by directing more funding and attention to crucial battleground contests without diverting energy to a large national event.
Each finalist city will now host visits from DNC leadership and members of the party’s Technical Advisory Group this spring to evaluate infrastructure, hotel capacity, transportation planning and other operational components before a final decision is announced. The chosen host city will become the backdrop for the Democrats’ campaign to retake the White House in 2028, setting the tone for the general election and showcasing the party’s vision for the future.
