TikTok’s design declared illegal in Europe over “addictive” features

Saturday, February  7, 2026- European regulators have ruled that TikTok’s design features, including endless scrolling and algorithm-driven content feeds, are illegal under consumer protection laws. The ruling targets elements of the app specifically engineered to keep users, particularly teenagers, engaged for long periods, labeling them as exploitative and harmful.

TikTok now faces potential fines and is under pressure to change its platform immediately. Authorities warn that failure to comply could result in more severe penalties, signaling a shift in Europe’s approach to regulating social media and protecting vulnerable users.

The decision comes as regulators across the continent increase scrutiny on digital platforms. For content creators, advertisers, and businesses relying on TikTok, this could mean a rapid change in user behavior and engagement, making it crucial to adapt strategies to the evolving platform rules.
