Here’s how much snow the Sierra got this weekend — and how much is on the way

Wednesday, February  18, 2026-The Sierra Nevada mountains were pummeled by a powerful winter storm over the Presidents Day weekend, with heavy snow burying peaks and mountain communities.

Snow totals reported over the past few days show feet of new snow at major ski areas and high elevations, with the Central Sierra Snow Laboratory recording more than 37 inches of snow in 48 hours, and other stations across the range reporting similar deep accumulations. Several resorts and mountain passes saw intense snowfall, forcing dangerous travel conditions and road closures.

Meteorologists warn that this snowfall is just the beginning. Forecasts indicate that snow will continue to accumulate through much of this week as additional storm systems move inland from the Pacific, with another 2 to 4 feet expected in many portions of the Sierra by mid‑week. Some long‑range models suggest widespread mountain snow could reach up to a dozen feet or more through the end of February if the current storm pattern persists.

The ongoing and forecasted snow will have significant impacts: travel across major routes like Interstate 80 remains hazardous or closed at times, avalanche danger is elevated, and avalanche control operations are ongoing. While the heavy snowfall will help replenish Sierra snowpack — a crucial source of California’s water supply — travel advisories and winter storm warnings remain in effect, and residents and travelers are urged to prepare for continued snow and difficult conditions through the week.
