Greenland prime minister says 'no thanks' to TRUMP's hospital ship

Monday, February 23, 2026-Greenland’s new prime minister has firmly rejected a public offer from President Donald Trump to send an American hospital ship to the Arctic island — in no uncertain terms.

Trump announced on social media that he was planning to send a “great hospital boat” to Greenland to help care for “many people” who he claimed were sick and not being properly treated. But Greenland’s leader responded with a direct message: “no thanks.”

Jens‑Frederik Nielsen made clear that Greenland already has a functioning system that delivers free universal healthcare to its roughly 60,000 residents — a cornerstone of society that contrasts sharply with the United States’ costly medical system. He underscored that any cooperation with Washington should come through formal diplomatic channels, not surprise declarations on social media.

The exchange highlights deeper diplomatic tensions and sensitivity around Arctic politics. Denmark — which oversees Greenland’s foreign and defense affairs — also rebuffed the proposal, stressing that Greenlanders receive the care they need within their existing system and through support from Danish medical services when necessary.

As fallout continues, leaders in Copenhagen and Nuuk are demanding respectful engagement rather than what they view as unilateral gestures that complicate ongoing negotiations on Arctic security and international cooperation.
