Diver finds his second Crusader sword in 5 years off Israel’s coast

Wednesday, February 25, 2026-A recreational diver has uncovered a second medieval sword off the coast of Israel, marking another extraordinary underwater discovery in less than five years.

The sword, believed to date back to the Crusader period, was found buried beneath sand and marine growth along the Mediterranean shoreline. Marine currents had recently shifted, exposing the artifact and giving the diver a rare glimpse into history resting beneath the waves.

Authorities from the Israel Antiquities Authority quickly secured the weapon for preservation and further study. Experts say such finds are exceptionally rare and provide valuable insight into the presence of Crusader forces along the Levantine coast. The condition of the sword, despite centuries underwater, highlights how sand coverage can protect metal artifacts from severe corrosion.

The discovery underscores the rich archaeological potential still hidden beneath Israel’s coastline. With advanced conservation techniques and growing public awareness, underwater archaeology is gaining urgency and importance. Each find not only deepens historical understanding but also reinforces the need to protect cultural heritage sites from looting and environmental damage.
