Wednesday, February 18, 2026-Bayer AG has announced a proposed $7.25 billion settlement to resolve thousands of lawsuits alleging that its popular weedkiller, Roundup, causes cancer.
The agreement would cover both current and future claims, marking one of the largest corporate settlements related to a single product in recent U.S. history. Plaintiffs argue that long-term exposure to Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate, led to serious health consequences, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
The settlement comes after years of high-profile trials in which juries awarded hundreds of millions in damages to plaintiffs. Bayer maintains that Roundup is safe when used according to label directions, but company executives have indicated that the settlement is intended to bring closure to ongoing litigation and reduce legal uncertainty. Legal experts note that the agreement could influence future product liability cases, particularly those involving alleged health risks from widely used chemicals.
If approved by the courts, the settlement will require Bayer to establish a structured payment plan and provide additional support for affected plaintiffs, including medical monitoring and compensation for treatment costs. While some plaintiffs may still opt out to pursue individual claims, the resolution is expected to dramatically reduce the number of pending lawsuits and signal an end to a long-running legal battle over the safety of one of the company’s most prominent products.
