What to know about the ELIZABETH SMART kidnapping case

Saturday, January 24, 2026-In June 2002, 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah. The perpetrator, Brian David Mitchell, forced Elizabeth at knife-point out of her home and held her captive for nine months along with his accomplice Wanda Barzee. During this time, Elizabeth was repeatedly abused and moved between hidden locations to avoid detection. She was rescued by police on March 12, 2003, in Sandy, Utah, approximately 18 miles from her home.

The case drew national attention due to the massive search efforts and Elizabeth’s younger sister, Mary Katherine, whose recall of the abductor’s voice helped authorities develop leads. Public awareness campaigns, media coverage, and law enforcement coordination were pivotal in locating Elizabeth alive, ending what had been one of the most high-profile abduction cases in U.S. history.

After her rescue, Brian Mitchell was sentenced to life in prison without parole, while Wanda Barzee received a 15-year sentence and was later released in 2018. Elizabeth Smart has since become a prominent advocate for child safety, founding the Elizabeth Smart Foundation and sharing her story to educate families and prevent abductions. She continues to work in activism and now lives with her family, dedicating herself to raising awareness about missing and exploited children.
