UN experts condemn US aggression against Venezuela

Friday, January 9, 2026- United Nations human rights and legal experts have publicly condemned the United States’ recent military operations against Venezuela, including the bombardment of cities, the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, and an ongoing blockade and strikes at sea.

According to these experts, the attacks constitute a “grave, manifest and deliberate violation” of fundamental international law, breaching the UN Charter’s prohibition on the use of force against another sovereign state and risk destabilizing the broader region. They warned that these actions set a dangerous precedent and undermine global peace and security.

The experts highlighted that the use of armed force without clear legal justification including blockades and lethal operations on vessels violates established norms and endangers human rights, especially the right to life.

They called for accountability, independent investigations, and collective measures from UN Member States to halt what they termed “illegal aggression,” and emphasized the importance of respecting sovereignty, non‑intervention, and peaceful dispute resolution.

Beyond UN experts, legal scholars and international jurists have echoed the condemnation, presenting arguments before the United Nations Security Council and labeling the U.S. actions as violations of international law. This coordinated criticism reflects deep global concern about unilateral military intervention and its implications for international order.
