TRUMP's move to topple MADURO is fraught with risk - what happens next is unclear

Monday, January 5, 2026- President Donald Trump’s dramatic decision to remove Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power — including a U.S. military operation that led to Maduro’s capture and transportation to the United States — marks one of the most controversial foreign policy moves in recent U.S. history.

The Trump administration insists the action was justified by Maduro’s alleged ties to narco‑trafficking and the need to restore democratic norms, but critics argue the operation sidestepped legal constraints and deteriorated long‑standing international norms. The lack of clear legal authority and the bypassing of Congress has sparked sharp debate both domestically and abroad.

In the immediate aftermath, Washington has sent mixed signals about its role in Venezuela’s future. Trump said the U.S. would “run” the country temporarily until a safe transition can occur, though officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio later clarified that the United States does not intend to govern Venezuela day‑to‑day.

Meanwhile, Venezuela’s Supreme Court has named Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as interim president, a move complicating U.S. efforts and raising questions about legitimacy and political stability. The power vacuum has triggered diplomatic tension and uncertainty, with regional governments and global powers watching closely as the country grapples with internal divisions.

The risks ahead are significant and multifaceted. Experts warn the United States may find itself embroiled in the difficult task of stabilizing a nation long plagued by economic collapse, political polarization, and institutional decay. There is also concern that the intervention sets a controversial precedent that could embolden other states to justify similar actions, weakening the global rules‑based order.

At the same time, claims that the operation was driven by access to Venezuela’s vast oil resources have fueled international criticism. With no clear pathway to legitimacy or unity inside Venezuela, and diplomatic backlash growing, what happens next remains deeply uncertain and fraught with potential geopolitical consequences that could reverberate far beyond Caracas.
