TRUMP calls for U.S. military spending to rise more than 50% to $1.5 trillion

Thursday, January 8, 2026- President Donald Trump has publicly called for a dramatic increase in U.S. defense spending, proposing a $1.5 trillion military budget for fiscal year 2027 — a rise of more than 50 % over the approximately $901 billion defense budget approved for 2026.

The proposal, announced in social media posts and discussed with lawmakers, represents the largest military spending request in U.S. history and is framed by the administration as necessary due to “troubled and dangerous times” facing the nation. Trump described the expanded budget as essential for building what he calls a “Dream Military” capable of deterring threats and keeping the United States safe and secure.

The request comes amid heightened global tensions and recent U.S. military actions, including operations in the Caribbean and South America that have drawn wide attention.

Trump has also linked the proposed defense spending increase to revenue generated from tariffs imposed under his administration, arguing that these revenues will help fund the higher budget while still allowing for debt reduction and other priorities. In making the case for the increase, Trump pointed to evolving geopolitical challenges and the need for the United States to maintain a competitive edge over rivals.

Budget experts and lawmakers have reacted with skepticism, noting that congressional approval is required before the $1.5 trillion figure can become law, and that even optimistic projections show tariff revenue falling well short of covering the full cost of the proposed increase.

Critics also warn that the unprecedented jump in defense spending could add trillions to the national debt over the coming decade. At the same time, major U.S. defense stocks rallied on news of the proposal, reflecting investor expectations of increased government spending on military contracts and equipment.
