TRUMP administration prepares to unveil new Gaza leadership

Thursday, January 15, 2026- The Trump administration is preparing to announce a new governance structure for the Gaza Strip as part of efforts to move beyond the ceasefire and toward reconstruction and demilitarization.

The announcement, expected in mid-January 2026, marks the start of “Phase Two” of President Trump’s peace plan following the Israel-Hamas agreement in October 2025. This phase focuses on forming a transitional leadership body and beginning reconstruction work after years of conflict.

The proposed structure includes a 14- to 15-member Palestinian technocratic administration, tentatively called the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), which would oversee daily governance, utilities, education, and civil services during the transitional period.

The committee is expected to be led by experienced figures such as former Palestinian Authority minister Ali Shaath, with oversight from an international Board of Peace chaired by Trump and coordinated on the ground by former U.N. envoy Nickolay Mladenov.

Phase Two also aims to begin full demilitarization of the enclave, reconstruction of infrastructure, and training of security forces, though progress remains uneven. Israeli strikes have occasionally continued despite the ceasefire, and key issues like disarmament of Hamas and withdrawal of Israeli troops remain unresolved.

The new leadership plan is part of broader U.S. and regional efforts, including Egypt and Qatar, to stabilize Gaza and transition from militant rule to civilian governance, while diplomatic negotiations continue.
