Russian strike on Ukraine's Kyiv leaves 1,330 buildings still without heat, mayor says

Tuesday, January 27, 2026-A renewed wave of Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv has left at least 1,330 residential buildings without heating, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported, as the city continues to grapple with the impact of targeted attacks on critical energy infrastructure.

The damage comes amid ongoing, harsh winter conditions, compounding the hardship for residents who already face power and heat outages from earlier strikes. Officials say crews are working to restore services, but progress has been slowed by repeated attacks and the extreme cold.

This disruption is part of a broader pattern of intensified Russian bombardment aimed at Ukraine’s energy network during the winter months, a strategy that has left large areas without reliable heat or electricity and forced emergency measures across the capital and other regions. Sub-zero temperatures are worsening the humanitarian impact, with cities like Kharkiv also suffering widespread power losses and infrastructure damage.

In addition to infrastructure damage, recent Russian attacks in other cities have resulted in civilian casualties, including deaths and injuries, underscoring the broader toll of the conflict as it continues into 2026. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other officials have called for increased international support and heightened defensive efforts, emphasizing that repeated strikes on energy systems are intensifying the humanitarian crisis and complicating efforts toward peace negotiations.
