RICHARD CODEY, former NJ governor who replaced JIM MCGREEVEY, dies at 79

Tuesday, January 13, 2026- Richard “Dick” Codey, a towering figure in New Jersey politics and the state’s longest‑serving legislator, has died at the age of 79 after a brief illness, his family announced Sunday.

The beloved public servant passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by loved ones, bringing an end to a remarkable 50‑year career in the New Jersey Legislature where he championed causes ranging from mental health care to public safety.

Codey, a Democrat, stepped into the role of acting governor in 2004 following the resignation of Gov. Jim McGreevey, serving until 2006 and later briefly again when then‑Governor Jon Corzine was injured. His tenure was marked by a reputation for humility, accessibility, and tireless advocacy for his constituents, traits that earned widespread respect across the political spectrum.

Beyond the governor’s mansion, he was known for advancing policies on health and community welfare and working collaboratively with leaders at all levels of government.

Leaders and residents across New Jersey have expressed deep sorrow at his passing, noting that the state has lost not just a seasoned lawmaker but a figure whose commitment to service left a lasting impact on communities statewide. His family has said details about memorial services will be shared in the coming days.
