Friday, January 9, 2026- Portland is in a state of shock and demand for answers after U.S. Border Patrol agents shot and wounded two people Thursday afternoon during a vehicle stop in the city’s East Portland neighborhood.
Local emergency responders found both victims a man and a woman with gunshot wounds after the pair drove themselves several blocks from the initial incident before calling 911. Both were taken to local hospitals in unknown condition, and police have confirmed the shooting involved federal agents.
Federal and city authorities are offering sharply different accounts of what happened. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says the agents were conducting a “targeted vehicle stop” tied to suspected criminal activity and that the driver allegedly “weaponized” the vehicle, forcing an agent to fire in self‑defense.
Portland officials, including Mayor Keith Wilson, have expressed skepticism of the federal version and are pushing for independent investigations and accountability as tensions rise especially in the wake of a separate fatal shooting by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis earlier this week.
The incident has sparked widespread protests and calls for immediate action. Hundreds gathered outside the local ICE facility and at City Hall, demanding transparency and a halt to federal immigration enforcement operations in Portland until all facts are established.
Oregon’s attorney general has also launched a formal probe to determine whether the agents acted within the scope of their lawful authority, and community leaders are pressing for reforms to prevent future violence.
