Person with measles traveled through Maryland, Virginia last week, health officials say

Monday, January 12, 2026- Health officials are urging immediate awareness after confirming that a person infected with measles traveled through parts of Maryland and Virginia last week, potentially exposing others in public spaces.

Measles is one of the most contagious viruses, and exposure can occur simply by being in the same indoor area for a short period of time. Authorities are actively notifying locations and advising anyone who may have been present to monitor symptoms closely and act quickly.

Those at highest risk include unvaccinated individuals, young children, pregnant people, and anyone with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can begin with fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes before progressing to a distinctive rash. Health departments are emphasizing that people who suspect exposure should call ahead before visiting a doctor or hospital to prevent further spread.

This situation highlights the importance of vaccination and rapid response. Officials stress that the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine remains highly effective and widely available. As travel and public movement continue at high levels, public health leaders are calling on communities to stay informed, verify vaccination status, and take preventive action now to limit further transmission and protect public health.
