Officials confirm tuberculosis outbreak at SF private school

Friday, January 30, 2026-Health authorities have confirmed an active tuberculosis (TB) outbreak at Archbishop Riordan High School, a private Catholic school in San Francisco. At least three individuals connected to the school have tested positive for active TB since the initial case was identified in November, prompting urgent action by the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Officials have initiated extensive testing and contact tracing among students and staff to prevent further spread of the airborne disease.

The outbreak has disrupted normal school operations, with administrators temporarily suspending in-person classes and shifting to remote and hybrid learning while screenings continue. All students and staff are required to complete TB testing by February 20 in order to return to campus or participate in indoor activities. Indoor masking has been strongly recommended, and several athletic events, including basketball games, have been postponed as a precaution.

Public health experts say a cluster of three active TB cases in a school setting is notable, as tuberculosis is relatively uncommon in the United States. While TB is treatable with a course of antibiotics, it can spread through prolonged close contact when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely and are providing guidance and support to the school community as containment efforts remain underway.
