New York reports record-high number of flu hospitalizations in a single week

Monday, January 5, 2026- New York State health officials have confirmed a record‑breaking surge in flu hospitalizations, with more people admitted for influenza in one week than ever before in state history.

For the week ending Dec. 27, the State Department of Health reported 4,546 flu‑related hospitalizations, nearly 1,000 more than the previous week, underscoring the severity of this year’s flu season. State health leaders say this spike outpaces past seasonal trends and reflects unusually high flu activity across the region.

Public health authorities describe the current outbreak as more intense than recent years, with elevated case counts and hospital admissions stretching healthcare resources. The dramatic weekly increase in hospitalizations comes amid widespread influenza transmission throughout the state, including New York City and upstate communities.

Experts attribute the surge to a rapidly spreading strain of the flu virus and higher overall infection rates, which have led to an unprecedented number of severe cases requiring inpatient care.

Officials are urging residents — especially children, older adults, pregnant people, and individuals with underlying health conditions — to get vaccinated if they have not already, as the vaccination can still help reduce the risk of severe illness.

They also recommend preventive measures such as frequent hand washing, staying home when sick, and considering antiviral medications within 48 hours of symptom onset if prescribed by a doctor. With flu season expected to continue into the winter months, health authorities emphasize vigilance and early treatment to mitigate further spread and hospital strain.
