Tuesday, January 27, 2026-A major political rally in Brasília took a shocking turn Sunday when a lightning bolt struck near supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, injuring at least 89 people amid heavy rain and thunderstorms.
The demonstration, which drew thousands to Praça do Cruzeiro to call for Bolsonaro’s release from prison and amnesty for his legal troubles, was underway when the sudden flash of lightning sent crowds scrambling for cover. Firefighters on the scene treated dozens of victims, with 47 transported to hospitals for further care, and 11 requiring more intensive medical attention due to the severity of their injuries.
The incident unfolded as supporters gathered under umbrellas and plastic ponchos, awaiting the arrival of politician Nikolas Ferreira, who had organized the march toward Brasília. Video circulating widely on social media captured the moment the bolt hit close to the dense crowd, prompting panic and chaos among rallygoers.
Many suffered not only from direct contact but also secondary injuries, including falls, sprains, and cases of hypothermia triggered by the severe weather conditions. Emergency services responded rapidly, providing on-site treatment before moving the more seriously wounded to medical facilities.
The lightning strike has intensified questions about public safety measures at large outdoor political events, especially in Brazil’s capital, where volatile weather is common. Authorities confirmed that most hospitalized attendees have since been discharged, with a handful still under observation. The rally was one of the most visible demonstrations in support of Bolsonaro since his imprisonment, and the unexpected natural disaster has raised concerns over planning and preparedness for extreme weather at mass gatherings.
