Thursday, January 29, 2026-Comedian and Saturday Night Live star Kenan Thompson is facing a lawsuit from his Los Angeles landlord, who alleges Thompson breached a residential lease and now owes more than $34,000. According to court filings, Thompson signed a 12-month lease for a three-bedroom rental property beginning October 1, with monthly rent set at $10,250.
The landlord claims Thompson failed to pay rent for November and December, resulting in $17,425 in unpaid rent, and also seeks compensation for losses after the property was re-rented at a lower rate following Thompson’s early exit.
The claim includes additional charges tied to the alleged breach. These include an $871 late fee, a $9,594 broker fee, and $1,000 in legal fees allowed under the lease agreement. After applying Thompson’s $10,250 security deposit, the total amount sought comes to approximately $34,390. The lawsuit is a civil matter focused solely on financial damages, not criminal penalties.
Thompson has not publicly commented on the lawsuit. However, sources close to him characterize the dispute as a contractual disagreement rather than deliberate non-payment, stating that he never received keys to the property or took possession of it. As the case proceeds, it underscores how even high-profile tenants can become entangled in complex lease disputes, particularly when high rents and strict contract terms are involved.
