Friday, January 23, 2026-In a devastating development in the Gaza conflict, an Israeli airstrike on Wednesday killed three journalists, including a cameraman and regular contributor for CBS News.
The Palestinian Civil Defense reported that the strike hit a vehicle in the Al‑Zahra area southwest of Gaza City while the journalists were documenting humanitarian aid distribution with the Egyptian Relief Committee. The other two journalists killed alongside the CBS contributor were identified as Mohammed Salah Qashta and Anas Ghneim.
The Israel Defense Forces stated that personnel targeted individuals operating a drone they believed was affiliated with Hamas and posed a threat to troops, but did not confirm whether the victims were aware of or involved in such activities. Eyewitnesses and local officials described the journalists as covering aid efforts and humanitarian conditions for displaced civilians when their vehicle was struck.
The death of the CBS News contributor, who was only recently married and had worked for years reporting from Gaza despite the extreme danger, has drawn international attention and renewed calls for better protection of journalists in conflict zones.
Press freedom groups and media organizations condemned the killings as part of a troubling pattern of deadly risks faced by reporters in Gaza, where hundreds of media workers have lost their lives since the war began.
