House committee set to approve resolutions holding CLINTONS in contempt of Congress

Thursday, January 22, 2026-The Republican-led House Oversight Committee is moving forward with resolutions to hold former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with subpoenas tied to an ongoing investigation into the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The committee has advanced the measures toward a potential full House vote, signaling a sharp escalation in its enforcement efforts. Lawmakers backing the resolutions argue that the Clintons defied lawful subpoenas issued as part of the probe, challenging Congress’s authority to compel testimony and documents.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said subpoenas carry the force of law and insisted that no individual, regardless of status or political influence, is above congressional oversight.

The move has exposed fractures within Congress, with some lawmakers expressing frustration over delays and incomplete cooperation in the investigation. Critics of the resolutions argue the committee should prioritize obtaining records and testimony from other key figures rather than focusing on high-profile political targets.

If the full House approves the contempt resolutions, the matter could be referred to the Department of Justice for possible criminal enforcement, a step that would be highly unusual given the stature of those involved.

The Clintons have dismissed the subpoenas as politically motivated and have offered limited cooperation short of in-person testimony, which the committee has rejected. As the standoff intensifies, it underscores deep partisan tensions over congressional power, accountability, and the limits of oversight in politically charged investigations.
