Heavy rain and king tides cause flooding in California

Monday, January 5, 2026- Heavy rain and unusually high king tides have combined to trigger significant flooding across parts of California, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern counties.

Roads were submerged, vehicles were trapped, and emergency crews carried out water rescues as water levels rose dramatically in low‑lying areas. Flood warnings and advisories remained in effect as additional rain was expected to continue into early next week, keeping communities on alert.

The storm system brought heavy rainfall to much of the state, with some areas receiving several inches of rain over a short period, creating runoff that worsened the flooding.

At the same time, king tides — exceptionally high tides caused by astronomical alignment — pushed water further inland along the coast and Bay shorelines, leading to record‑high tidal readings in places such as San Francisco. Authorities reported water covering major roadways, prompting closures and stranding motorists, and urged residents to avoid travel where possible.

In Southern California, heavy rains also led to mudslides and localized flooding, forcing evacuations and damaging infrastructure. In one incident, a man died after being swept into a creek during the storm.

The extreme weather follows a wet start to winter after a mostly dry autumn, marking one of the stormiest starts to the season in years for millions of residents across the state. Officials continue to monitor conditions and warn that additional rainfall and high tides could prolong hazardous conditions.
