Thursday, January 22, 2026-Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, issued a rare and sobering alert to the people of the Arctic island this week, saying Greenland must be ready for “everything” amid growing concern over the United States’ intentions toward the territory.
Speaking at a press conference in the capital Nuuk, Nielsen said that while a military conflict remains unlikely, it cannot be completely ruled out, especially given repeated statements from U.S. leadership that have not dismissed the use of force in pursuit of strategic goals. This warning has prompted Greenlandic authorities to begin planning civil preparedness measures, including public information campaigns and guidance on storing essential supplies.
The heightened rhetoric stems from comments by President Donald Trump and his team suggest Washington wants greater control over Greenland for national security reasons, including its strategic position in the Arctic.
Trump’s remarks have included references to using all available means including military options to secure the island, although some U.S. officials have downplayed the likelihood of direct action. In response, Nielsen stressed that Greenlanders should remain vigilant and organized, even as he acknowledged such scenarios are not the most probable outcome.
Denmark, which retains sovereignty over Greenland, has echoed concerns about the implications of any forceful action, with Danish leaders warning that an attack on Greenland would severely damage NATO and transatlantic security ties. European partners have also rallied in support of Greenland’s autonomy and territorial integrity. Against this backdrop, Greenland’s call for readiness underscores growing unease in the region as Arctic geopolitics intensify and long-standing alliances face fresh pressure.
