Governor LAMONT declares state of emergency, limits commercial vehicle travel ahead of approaching major winter storm

Tuesday, January 27, 2026-Connecticut is bracing for a significant winter storm that has already begun to disrupt travel and daily life across the state, prompting Governor Ned Lamont to declare a state of emergency and impose strict travel restrictions for commercial vehicles.

The emergency declaration effective from 12:00 p.m. Sunday temporarily bans trucks, RVs, tankers, and other commercial vehicles from all limited-access highways as heavy snow and potentially whiteout conditions make roadways treacherous. This preemptive measure is aimed at preventing accidents and keeping key corridors clear for snow removal and emergency responders as forecasts call for widespread 12- to 18-inch snow accumulations.

The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated for residents and businesses alike. Officials have been clear that travel will be extremely hazardous during the height of the storm, with transportation crews urging motorists to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

Emergency operations have been scaled up statewide, with the Connecticut Emergency Operations Center partially activated to coordinate response efforts and resource deployment around the clock. Even as the storm’s heaviest snow begins to taper, lighter snowfall and frigid temperatures are expected to persist, meaning slick roads and reduced visibility could continue into Monday.

For companies and commuters, the travel ban underscores the importance of planning ahead and prioritizing safety. While the ban on commercial traffic was lifted early Monday after conditions improved, authorities continue to strongly advise motorists to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel while plow crews work to clear snow and ice.

Residents are urged to monitor official state and local channels for real-time updates on road conditions and service changes, and to remain prepared for lingering winter weather impacts through the week.
