EU agrees on complete ban of Russian gas imports by 2027

Tuesday, January 27, 2026-The European Union has reached an agreement to completely phase out Russian gas imports by 2027, marking a decisive step in the bloc’s efforts to reduce dependence on Russian energy. The move comes amid heightened concerns over energy security and geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe.

EU officials emphasized that the ban will accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources, including renewables and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from non-Russian suppliers. Member states are expected to implement measures to mitigate potential supply shortages and maintain stable energy prices for consumers.

Energy analysts note that the decision signals a significant geopolitical and economic shift, reinforcing the EU’s commitment to energy independence. While challenges remain in securing diversified energy sources, officials say the ban is essential for long-term stability and strategic autonomy.
