Cowboys move on from DC EBERFLUS

Wednesday, January 7, 2026- The Dallas Cowboys have officially moved on from defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus after just one season, marking a significant shift for a defense that struggled mightily throughout the 2025 campaign.

Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones announced the decision following a 7‑9‑1 finish that saw Dallas miss the playoffs for the second straight year and surrender a franchise‑record 511 points. The unit ended the season ranked near the bottom of the NFL in multiple defensive categories, prompting leadership to conclude that a new direction is urgently needed for sustained success.

Eberflus, who returned to Dallas after previous coaching stints including time with the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts, was brought in to revitalize a defense that had deteriorated over the past seasons.

Instead, the Cowboys allowed the most points in the league and ranked 30th overall, illustrating that changes on the defensive side of the ball were essential. Jones emphasized that while he has respect for Eberflus as a coach and person, the performance dictated that a reset was necessary to meet the franchise’s high expectations.

The search for a new defensive leader is now underway, with Dallas preparing to make its fourth defensive coordinator hire in as many years. The decision underscores how critical it is for the Cowboys to stabilize a unit that has repeatedly underperformed despite having top offensive talent.

With strong pressure from fans and analysts alike for a defensive overhaul, the Cowboys’ next coordinator could be a defining addition in their effort to return to playoff contention in 2026.
