US scolds Rwanda for breaking peace deal as M23 rebels seize key Congo city
Sunday, December 14, 2025 -The United States has condemned Rwanda for its alleged role in violating a peace agreement after M23 rebels captured a strategic city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Washington described the seizure as a “serious destabilizing action” and urged both Rwanda and the DRC to adhere to commitments designed to prevent further conflict. The city’s fall marks a significant escalation in the ongoing regional instability.
The M23 rebel offensive has displaced thousands of residents, and humanitarian agencies are warning of an urgent need for aid. U.S. officials claim that Rwanda’s support, direct or indirect, for the rebels undermines prior agreements brokered to reduce cross-border violence.
The situation has intensified fears that localized fighting could spill over into neighboring regions, threatening broader Central African security.
International observers are calling for immediate diplomatic intervention to prevent further territorial gains by M23 and to hold parties accountable for violations.
The U.S. has signaled it may increase pressure through sanctions or other measures if Rwanda does not comply with peace obligations, highlighting the high stakes of enforcing agreements in a conflict-ridden region.
