TRUMP pardons Texas democrat HENRY CUELLAR — what it means now
Thursday, December 4, 2025 -President Donald Trump has granted a full pardon to Representative Henry Cuellar and his wife, clearing them of all federal bribery and conspiracy charges that had loomed since their 2024 indictment.
Prosecutors had accused the couple of accepting nearly $600,000 in bribes from a foreign oil-and-gas company linked to Azerbaijan and a Mexican bank — payments allegedly funneled through sham consulting contracts so the congressman could advance those foreign interests. Cuellar had pleaded not guilty and was preparing for a trial scheduled for April 2026.
In announcing the pardon, Trump said the case against Cuellar and his wife represented a “weaponized” use of the justice system, claiming the prosecution was retaliation for Cuellar’s criticism of border policies. Trump declared, “Your nightmare is finally over!” and framed the pardon as a defense of free speech and political dissent.
The pardon immediately reshapes the political landscape. Cuellar, a longtime Texas congressman known for his conservative-leaning positions despite being a Democrat, confirmed he will run for re-election without the burden of ongoing legal battles.
The decision also reignites debate over presidential pardon power: whether prosecutions involving influential figures can be nullified before trial, and what this means for accountability within Congress and the broader justice system.
