SNAP ban on soda, candy and other foods take effect in five states Jan. 1

Wednesday, December 31, 2025 -New restrictions on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are taking effect in five U.S. states starting January 1, banning the purchase of soda, candy, and other sugary or low-nutrition foods.

State officials say the move is intended to encourage healthier eating habits among recipients and reduce long-term public health costs associated with obesity, diabetes, and related conditions.

The policy change has drawn mixed reactions. Public health experts generally support the initiative, citing potential benefits for community health and nutrition. However, some advocacy groups argue that it may limit choice for low-income families and require additional education and support to ensure access to affordable, nutritious alternatives.

Retailers in the affected states are preparing to adjust systems to enforce the new restrictions, while SNAP recipients are being encouraged to review eligible items and plan purchases accordingly.

The rollout underscores a broader national conversation about balancing nutrition, personal choice, and public health in government assistance programs.
