Pope Leo urges 'courage' to end Ukraine war in first Christmas address

Friday, December 26, 2025 -In his first Christmas Day message as pontiff, Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful appeal for peace and dialogue to a large crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican.

In the traditional Urbi et Orbi address, he singled out the ongoing war in Ukraine, urging the parties involved, with support from the international community, to “find the courage to engage in sincere, direct and respectful dialogue” as a path toward ending the conflict.

The pontiff’s message was broadcast globally and emphasized the urgent need for meaningful negotiation and an end to hostilities as part of a broader call for peace.

Pope Leo’s remarks on Ukraine were part of a wider plea for peace in conflict zones around the world, including in the Middle East and Africa, where wars have left millions suffering or displaced.

He asked for solidarity with civilians affected by violence and stressed that peace requires not only prayer but active participation from leaders and communities to reject violence and embrace reconciliation. His address called on believers and policymakers alike to reject indifference and work toward lasting peace through humility and respect for human dignity.

The message comes as international efforts continue to seek a diplomatic solution to the nearly four-year war, with recent negotiations still struggling to produce direct talks between Russia and Ukraine.

Pope Leo’s call for courage reinforces pressure on global actors to intensify efforts toward constructive engagement and peaceful resolution, reflecting the Vatican’s long-standing support for mediation in international conflicts.
