NHTSA launches investigation into Tesla Model 3 emergency door handles

Thursday, December 25, 2025 -The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into Tesla Model 3 vehicles after reports raised concerns about the functionality of their emergency door handles.

The probe aims to determine whether the handles meet safety standards and operate reliably in critical situations. Tesla owners are being advised to stay alert and report any issues with door mechanisms to ensure their safety.

According to preliminary reports, some drivers have experienced difficulty opening doors during emergencies, prompting NHTSA to assess whether a broader safety defect exists.

The agency is collecting data from Tesla and vehicle owners nationwide to evaluate potential risks. Meanwhile, Tesla has not issued a formal recall but is cooperating with the investigation to provide technical information and guidance to affected customers.

Safety experts emphasize the importance of functioning emergency exits in vehicles, noting that any malfunction can pose serious hazards in accidents or fires. NHTSA’s swift action underscores its commitment to automotive safety, and affected drivers are encouraged to monitor updates closely.

The outcome of the investigation could influence Tesla’s design adjustments and reinforce regulatory oversight for emerging electric vehicle technologies.
