Major winter storm predicted to bring snow, ice to Midwest and Northeast
Friday, December 26, 2025 -A significant winter storm is forecast to sweep from the Upper Midwest into the Northeast over the next few days, bringing snow, ice, and dangerous travel conditions across a wide swath of the United States.
Weather systems moving through Thursday and Friday are expected to produce ice accumulation in parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and central Pennsylvania, with snow spreading into New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.
Some areas could see 6–9 inches or more of snow, especially around New York City, northern New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania, while ice buildups exceeding a quarter inch are possible in central Pennsylvania and nearby regions, making roads slick and hazardous.
The storm’s timing could severely disrupt holiday travel, with major airports across the Northeast already reporting flight cancellations and delays, and weather alerts now covering tens of millions of people.
Hazardous conditions are likely to affect major highways, including key interstate corridors, prompting travel advisories and warnings from meteorologists. Power outages are also a concern in areas where heavy ice weighs down trees and power lines.
Officials are urging residents to delay travel if possible, prepare emergency kits, and closely monitor forecasts as the storm moves in. Snowfall rates could be heavy at times through Friday and into Saturday morning, with precipitation tapering off by late Saturday.
Drivers and commuters should expect slippery surfaces, reduced visibility, and extended travel times as communities deploy plows and emergency crews to keep roads passable and essential services operating.
