Japan's PM TAKAICHI says 'always open' to dialogue with China

Wednesday, December 17, 2025 -Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on Wednesday that Tokyo remains “always open” to dialogue with China, even as bilateral tensions persist over regional security issues.

Speaking at a news conference in Tokyo, Takaichi described China as an “important neighbour” and emphasized the need to maintain a constructive and stable relationship. Her remarks signal Japan’s intent to keep diplomatic channels open despite recent strains.

The statement comes amid heightened friction following Takaichi’s comments suggesting Japan could consider involvement if China were to attack Taiwan, a self-ruled island claimed by Beijing.

China strongly criticized the remarks, responding with diplomatic protests and measures that have impacted tourism and official exchanges. Security concerns in the region have also intensified due to recent close military encounters between the two countries.

Despite the tensions, Takaichi reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to ongoing dialogue at multiple levels to manage differences and prevent further escalation. Japanese officials say sustained communication is essential to safeguarding regional stability while protecting national interests.

The prime minister’s position reflects Japan’s effort to balance firm security policies with continued diplomatic engagement with China.
